Anis del Mono Sweet

One of the most famous liqueurs in Spain is this Anis del Mono. The name means a monkey's anisette - which is why a monkey is shown on the label. 1870 The brothers Bofounded the company in the Catalan industrial city of Barcelona. It is said that the brand name goes back to a living monkey, which one of the brothers is said to have received as a gift from a business partner.

If you look closely at the picture on the label, you can see that the monkey is not a normal monkey. It's that his face is based on a portrait of Charles Darwin. Apparently the monkey in his right hand was holding a scroll with the claim to truth "It's the best, science says it and I'm not lying" and in his left hand a bottle of Anis del Mono holding Darwin's face was depicted, as he very often became the laughing stock of his opponents because of his revolutionary ideas at that time.

The liqueurs of the company, which has been owned by the Spanish Osborne Group since 1975, are still produced today according to the traditional recipe.

The Anis del Mono dulce is as the name already says (dulce) sweet. Only the finest natural anise and other aromatic plants are used for distillation in copper distillation plants

The anise is crystal clear, in the nose it is powerful and you can perceive intense anise aromas and delicate herbs. In Spain, Anis del Mono is traditionally drunk as a digestive liqueur.

Other ingredients are cane sugar, neutral alcohol and demineralised water.

Store in a well-ventilated place away from heat sources.

How is Anis del Mono drunk?

  • With water and ice and enjoy the "Palomita", typical of the "Levante" region (East)
  • Mixed with Anis del Mono dry, with lemon juice and ice as la "Paloma" enjoy as in Andalusia
  • Or drink it pure or with a brandy as "Sol y Sombra" (sun and shade) or in coffee to sweeten it
