Yurrita Group is a family business founded in 1867. In its origins it was dedicated to the production and sale of pickled and salted fish that it distributed from Mutriku to the rest of Spain, using horse-drawn carriages as a method of transport. The original factory began in the basement of Yurrita's family home. The primitive Yurrita canning factory is known as "Casa Mauleón". Of all the current Spanish canneries, this building is probably the oldest of those dedicated to the production of canned fish.
The company was founded by D. José Miguel Mauleón, in the same place of residence of the family, in "Casa Mauleon". José Miguel's daughter, Francisca, married Agapito Yurrita, forming the second generation and the beginning of the Yurrita family in the canning and salting industry. After five generations and almost 150 years of history, Yurrita is the oldest cannery in the Basque Country and one of the oldest active agri-food companies in Spain.
With the incorporation in the 50's of Mr. Alfonso Yurrita Zumalabe, Yurrita e Hijos was opened to the foreign market. Export was crucial to the company's development throughout the complicated post-war years. This export effort has enabled the company to now have a dense network of customers in more than 60 countries around the world.
Today Yurrita e Hijos is involved in the production of a wide variety of Gourmet products. Although Anchovy and Cantabrian Bonito are the company's flagships, a wide range of home-made croquettes and some dishes of Basque gastronomy are also prepared, such as cakes of scorpion fish, txangurro and bonito or chipirones en su tinta and encebollados.
Lorea is the main brand marketed by Yurrita e Hijos. Lorea has different product lines: Family Reserve (special family series), Lorea Green Selection (sustainable fishing and organically produced ingredients), Lorea Gourmet (canned and semi-preserved gourmet products) and Lorea cuisine (pre-cooked artisans and prepared dishes).
Lorea products are handcrafted products made with the best raw material: White Tuna, Cantabrian Anchovy, and Yellowfin Tuna along with other canned products that complete the wide range Lorea. In the Lorea Kitchen we prepare dishes with our own recipes.
Yurrita e Hijos uses raw materials that have been caught respecting traditional fishing gear, respecting Marine Reserves and sustainable fisheries management.
Lorea products are made by hand and by hand, taking care from the selection process to the packaging process.

Lorea products are exported to more than 60 countries, being one of the main Spanish exporters of canned and semi-canned products.
In 2011 Yurrita e Hijos became the first Spanish agri-food company to obtain the MSC certificate for anchovy. The objective of this certification is to maintain a sustainable fishing system that allows the recovery of the biomasses of the fish we use for our products.
Our company is a small family where we work about 100 people who generation after generation we have dedicated ourselves to the canning of fish. We are located in the municipality of Mutriku (Guipúzcoa), a town with a great canning tradition and a destination always linked to the sea.
